Fish farming: the world’s first bonito (Sarda sarda) larvae raised in captivity

Researchers at IFREMER’s experimental aquaculture station in Palavas-les-Flots succeeded in raising the world’s first Atlantic bonito (Sarda sarda) larvae in captivity. They effectively weaned the larvae of live food by the fifth day post-hatching, after which the larvae fed micro-pellets, an inert fish feed.

This breakthrough paves the way to the commercial farming of this species, based on a simplified feed regime, practically without having to supply any live micro-organisms. The nutritional needs of the Atlantic bonito can be met with inert feed (micro-pellets) right from the fry stage. This achievement represents a major step toward the domestication of this species.
