PELMED: a research cruise to assess small pelagic fish resources in the Mediterranean Sea

Aboard the research vessel L'Europe, the PELMED (PELagiques MEDiterranée) cruise for the assessment of fisheries resources began in the Gulf of Lion on 27 June and ran until 1 August 2011. Led by the Fisheries Resources Laboratory at the IFREMER Sète station, this research cruise combines acoustic detection and trawling operations to calculate abundance indices of small pelagic fish, such as the anchovy and the sardine, and also to study overall pelagic ecosystem functioning.
