A journey through the Gulf Stream with Ifremer - On April 4th & 5th at 7pm on ARTE

Two documentaries by German director Rolf Lambert trace the journey of the Gulf Stream, this great river under the sea, which is the subject of numerous scientific studies across the globe.

In the wake of shoots made in 2015/2016 at the Ifremer Bretagne Center in Brest, Ifremer is particularly represented in the 2nd report on 5 April. The documentary gives the floor to Serge Le Reste and Vincent Dutreuil of the Marine Engineering and Instrumentation Department and to Guillaume Maze of the "Océan Hauturier et Interactions d'échelles océaniques" (Ocean offshore and Oceanic Scale Interactions) Laboratory.

The Gulf Stream - From the Azores to the Arctic Circle

The Gulf Stream exerts a major influence on the climate of the regions bathed by the Atlantic. After crossing the eastern seaboard of the American continent to the offshore island of Newfoundland, the Gulf Stream crosses the Atlantic Ocean through the Azores archipelago. This hot ocean current bathes the coasts of these volcanic islands, and then reaches the shores of old Europe. Stops bring us to Brittany, north-western Ireland, to the northern tip of Scotland, which the Gulf Stream bypasses before warming the coasts of Iceland and the Lofoten Islands. The April 5 episode takes place aboard a scientific vessel that will go to the coast of Greenland, where the effects of global warming on the glaciers and the Gulf Stream itself are measured.
